Muscle contraction is limited to the fibers of a specific motor unit. When the nerve of this motor unit is activated, contraction of all the muscle fibers that it innervates occurs in an “all or none” manner. Gradations in force are accomplished by altering the number of motor units activated, changing the firing rate, and/or changing the firing pattern. Maximal strength can be achieved when the maximum number of motor units in a muscle are recruited, fire at maximal rates, and fire in a synchronized pattern.
These myofilaments consist primarily of two proteins, actin and myosin. These proteins are also known as the thin and thick filaments, respectively, and give skeletal muscle its striated appearance. However, the myofilament is not the final functional unit of the muscle. Myofilaments are composed of sarcomeres (Figure 1-2), which are the smallest functional units of muscle, and it is within these units that muscle contraction takes place. Under a microscope, the striated appearance of muscle can be distinguished by light and dark bands.
Maximal strength can be achieved when the maximum number of motor units in a muscle are recruited, fire at maximal rates, and fire in a synchronized pattern. Types of Muscle Contraction As muscle fibers contract, tension is developed within the muscle that changes the muscle length and joint angle. As muscle fibers contract, tension is developed within the muscle that changes the muscle length and joint angle. As a muscle shortens, the contraction is said to be concentric. A muscle performs positive work when it shortens from a mechanical standpoint.
