For captains, difficult crew members are those who have strong and obstructive personalities, or who have only a passive involvement with their duties. For copilots, the difficult personality is the captain with an abrasive and intransigent personality and an autocratic style of leadership.

They have the same number of senses (ten in all), comprising: visual (sight), auditory (hearing), tactile (touch), kinesthetic (muscle sense), balance, olfactory (smell), taste, cold, heat, and pain. The first five are of critical importance in flying and are given great attention in the selection and training of pilots. Normal (1 g) flight in visual flight conditions places only small demands on pilots and their senses, but abnormal flight producing high g forces in instrument flight conditions can produce in-flight spatial disorientation.

In these conditions the horizon cannot be perceived, snow covered ground and grey skies are merged, and a pilot would be deceived into believing that he or she was at a safe height above the ground. It has been shown that in a 'white-out' condition, a dark object is visible for many miles, while a snow covered object, even a mountain near to the observer, would be invisible.
